N-550 is a medium-particle-size, semi-reinforcing carbon black. It is the most reinforcing grade among all semi-reinforcing grades.
Compared to reinforcing carbon blacks, N550 provides better dispersion, easier processing, and greater resilience in the elastomer, but with lower tensile strength and abrasion resistance.
It can be used in various tire carcass applications where moderate modulus and reinforcement, along with good processing characteristics, are required. It also provides low “die swell” and moderately high resistance. Its low structure provides excellent dimensional stability in high-speed calendering and extrusion processes.
It is particularly suitable for rubber applications requiring good extrusion, low hysteresis, and greater reinforcement than the N600 and N700 Series grades.
It is also used in plastics as a substitute for lampblack and in inks, where it imparts a matte finish.
